Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) has recertified Asahi Breweries’ Shobara and Miyoshi forests to the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) standard for responsible forest management. The forest was first certified in 2001 and has maintained its FSC certification status ever since.

Asahi Breweries initially purchased its forested properties, located in Japan’s Hiroshima Prefecture, during World War II because of concerns that the company’s access to cork would be disrupted by the war. Since that time, the Asahi Forest managers have aimed to produce large-diameter, high-grade timber through long-term rotation years and careful forestry practices.

“Asahi Breweries has demonstrated its commitment to preserving a valuable forest resource,” said Dr. Robert J. Hrubes, Senior Vice President of SCS. “FSC certification provides independent recognition of the company’s efforts to support its community and natural resources.”

During the certification process, SCS’ audit team inspected the company’s forests and field offices, interviewed key public stakeholders, and confirmed compliance with the comprehensive environmental and social responsibility requirements of the FSC standard. The certified area covers 2,169 hectares of mostly cypress and cedar species.

Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) has been providing global leadership in third-party environmental and sustainability certification, auditing, testing and standards development for more than 25 years. SCS programs span a wide cross-section of industries, recognizing achievements in green building, product manufacturing, food and agriculture, forestry, retailing and more. http://www.scscertified.com
