Getting Started

SCS’ approach to helping our clients develop a sustainable sourcing strategy involves five steps. Any or all of these steps may apply to your specific situation.

Typically, the first steps involve engaging in a Needs Assessment review, followed by Opportunity Mapping planning session. This process is designed to align your sustainability goals with your current operational realities, and identify and prioritize opportunities for improvement.

  • During the Needs Assessment, we will review your goals and targets, and compare these to your current operational procedures, supply chain specifications, and tools. Through this assessment, we can determine what goals are being fulfilled and what issues remain to be addressed.
  • During the Opportunity Mapping session, options for addressing your needs are discussed from a risk/benefit analysis perspective.


Sustainability scorecards are used by retailers and manufacturers to define and encourage adoption of sustainability practices within supply chains. Well-designed scorecard systems help you manage risks, build relationships, and drive responsible, measurable environmental and social improvements. By contrast, a poorly implemented approach can create unnecessary busy work for your staff and create friction with your suppliers, without leading to beneficial results.

As your scorecard development partner, SCS will help you create a scorecard system that is practical to implement, reinforces your supplier relationships, and produces credible, auditable metrics to reinforce your brand.

Conformity Assessment

Once your scorecard is in place, SCS can guide you through the conformity assessment step.

  • Independent Audits — Our team of global auditors can independently verify compliance with your sustainable sourcing criteria. Independent conformity assessment assures that your suppliers are following through appropriately, which may be important to your key customers and stakeholders. It also provides the basis for adding up environmental improvements and social benefits that you may wish to publicize.
  • Staff Audits — We can also train your staff to conduct audits, depending on the level of impartiality your program requires, and your intended uses of the information.

Technical Tools

SCS completes the set-up process with a web-based reporting database. SCS’ IT team will custom-design this database to address all relevant life cycle issues, enabling you to track broad trends and subtle shifts in supply chain compliance or evaluate individual supplier performance.
