Pesticides

We test fresh foods, ingredients, processed foods, soil, and water, using a combination of multi-residue analyses (MRA) and specific residue analyses (SRA).  Well-designed product sampling and testing enables you to verify that residue levels comply with country-of-destination maximum residue limits (MRL). In addition, our analyses will help you clear FDA detention, or demonstrate compliance with additional objectives, such as organic certification.

  • Organochloride (OC)
  • Organonitrogen (ON)
  • Organophosphate (OP)
  • n-Methyl Carbamates (MC)

Microbiological

We test fresh produce, products, water, equipment and facilities for microbiological verification of food safety policies or programs, to help you ensure compliance with customer and FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) requirements.

Facility Quality Assurance - Our trained samplers meet all sampling needs, including: environmental swabbing, and pulling water and product samples. We can also set up line flow and sampling rotations with established scheduled testing. Our analytical testing capabilities include:

  • Total Coliform
  • Total Plate Count
  • E. Coli
  • Listeria
  • Salmonella
  • E. Coli-0157:H7
  • Yeast and Mold Analysis

Water Sources - SCS offers certified water testing for Total Coliform, Enterohemmoragic E. coli (EHEC), and E. coli. Our samplers have been trained to follow the Leafy Greens Marketing Association (LGMA) guidelines and Sprout Compliance for sampling, if needed.

Final Product - Our trained samplers pick up or pull your product samples to perform any of the following tests:

  • Total Plate Count
  • Total Coliform
  • Fecal Coliform
  • E. Coli
  • Yeast and Mold analysis

Food Safety Hold and Release - We can perform analysis on specific pathogens such as:

  • Salmonella
  • Listeria
  • E. coli 0157:H7
  • Shigella
  • Camphylobacter
Crisis Management and Recall Assistance

When a crisis occurs, whether it is foodborne illness outbreak or potential case of adulteration, rely on SCS to help. We will conduct the tests you need, develop sampling plans, and interface with government agencies on your behalf so that you can manage your emergency needs.

Attributes

Antioxidant Density - Our tests enable producers to verify the levels of essential antioxidants in dozens of crop categories in order to support Certified Antioxidant Superfood claims. This fast growing area reflects increasing consumer interest in the health benefits associated with these antioxidants (for instance, the past decade has witnessed a ten-fold rise in blueberry sales).

Sensory Evaluation - We conduct sensory evaluations to help growers and retailers gauge the flavor attributes of their products, and gain critical competitive advantage. These evaluations involve expert sensory panels and key flavor attribute testing. We also perform shelf-life and accelerated shelf-life testing.

GMO Detection - We offer both qualitative and quantitative methods to detect the presence of GMOs as well as the amount of GMO DNA present. Common GMO targets include soy, corn, and canola. Our GMO testing is based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods.

Gluten Assays - We run standard gluten assays as well as competitive ELISAs for fermented or hydrolyzed products.

Certification

SCS Global Testing Services is the testing arm of SCS Global Services, an internationally recognized third-party certifier and standards developer. We are uniquely able to combine your testing and certification needs, including:

Lab Qualifications and Methods

All labs are accredited under CA DHS ELAP and FAPAS, and some are ISO 17025 accredited. Our labs comply with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) protocols for US EPA-related activities, and all US labs are approved for US FDA import detection analysis for adulteration by microbiology, pesticides, filth, colorants, and artificial sweeteners.

Pesticide Testing Methods

SCS utilizes current FDA PAM, USDA QuEChERS, California Department of Food and Ag (CDFA), EPA and AOAC methodologies for our pesticide analysis. To ensure accurate and reproducible analysis, these methodologies are coupled with:

  • Stringent internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Chain-of-custody protocols for all samples from sample collection to analysis
  • High quality, high purity analytical standards
  • High quality equipment such as chromatographs (GC), high performance liquid CCMSCS chromatographs (HPLC), LCMSMS and mass spectrometers (MS)
  • Dual column/dual detection for all GCO LC analysis for instant contamination
Pathogen Testing Methods

Our labs use presumptive or ELISA methods for rapid screening of pathogens, and conduct confirmation using US FDA BAM (Bacterialogical Analytical Method) methods or quantitative polymeric chain reaction (PCR) methods if appropriate. When testing for pathogens, we recommend that environmental testing and swabs be conducted monthly, and that product verification be done on a lot-by-lot basis along with a "hold and release" approach. SCS follows the GAP Metrics protocol for water testing and monitoring.
