We’re testing fruits and vegetables grown by the some of most innovative farmers around the globe, both conventional and organic. Our ongoing testing helps farmers fine-tune their pest management practices, so they can minimize pesticide use, and eliminate residues in the foods they sell. These steps can lower farming costs by reducing chemical purchases, benefit the environment by encouraging the increased use of alternatives such as beneficial insects and mechanical controls, and help farm workers and communities by limiting exposure. These industry leaders are setting an important precedent for others to follow.
The percentage of children found to have organophosphate pesticide residues in their urine
Pesticides are linked to numerous health concerns, including neurological damage, cancer, fertility, birth defects, and hormone disruption. Residues are of particular concern for infants and children, whose young bodies are still developing, and other vulnerable populations. For instance, new scientific research connects pesticides in food with ADHD in children. Studies have found that 9 out of 10 children have organophosphate residues (potent neurotoxins) in their urine, and show that these residues disappear after just a few days when kids are put on a residue free diet.
Our laboratory testing confirms that there are no detected residues down to this low level, up to 1,000 times more stringent than legally permitted levels.
Our testing is comprehensive - covering all pesticides used, plus pesticides that may remain in the environment years after use. We require a full disclosure of pest management methods on every field so that we can target pesticides most effectively. Our labs confirm that there are no residues down to 0.01 parts per million, or lower in some instances. This level is 10 to 1,000 times more stringent than required by law.” Find out more information about our strict laboratory quality control and testing requirements.
